Yes, It's diving with manatees at 3 Sisters in January in Florida! It was officially awesome! Becky put a midweek (I guess 1 of the bonus of being unEmployed) dive trip and everything seemed to be pointing towards a "this will suck" adventure... I always tease her about....

this is why we dive WPB... e-ticket at Disney for sure. We're off to the NW Double Canyons to try and see if we can see some sharks - and sharks we do see! There are only 4 divers this morning and life is good. There are scattered clouds, but the sun is doing it's best to peak through We drop down and the DM motions for us to come over to big ledge...

back in Bonaire! Schweet.... When all's said and done - you just can't beat it with a stick. The price was so good, we HAD to go back to Bonaire. This time around we're staying up in Laogen Hill House.... 3 house.... Ohio (Staci & Wes), California (Chris, Nancy and Mel) and humble little Florida (Dawn, Sandy, JohneeD and myself). The price was even better than staying at Buddy Dive with all the perks! We got in on Friday evening around 8:00PM...

utimate rock - well I'll be danged.... now that I go back and read the last time I was here - it's all coming back to me... even the original 'structure' I mentioned in the original post and the mysterious purple reef fish!
Doing video on this dive so I knew I wasn't gonna be the best dive buddy, but I wanted to be as good as I could be. Dropped down from the boat and eased over to the structure - everybody was going left so WE went right. I didn't want to be in everybody swirl. Sure 'nuff.... about 1/2 way through the dive we passed everybody... that's how we knew we were 1/2 way round the structure.... and sure 'nuff when we passed everybody I figured we were back at the beginning... schweet - looked out on the sand and there was the shadow of the boat!

alice in Wonderland - this the magical mushroom plates site. I guess it's a standard on the trips and it never disappoints, A drift dive this time which makes it real nice to just kinda cruise and go. Same as last time and the last last time with all kinds of curious grouper and a most curious Dog Snapper - which is really a surprise. About 3/4 of the way through the dive the group did a split and I decided to stay with the majority... which was quite a hoot during the safety stop... in fact most of the video is about the safety stop... everybody being goofy!

3 beautiful sisters! Finally got to see the sight where the "BE THE CREATURE - Manatee" folks filmed their footage for the Animal Planet show. I'd seen their show and was like 'WOW' - that is some beautiful clear water they;re in and I certainly hadn't see that VIZ over at Kings Spring.
The unmistakeable entrance to the 3 Sisters is unforgettable. You go down a long 'arm' of the Crystal River and come to a small opening in the trees... There are a couple of posts that lead off a 100' very shallow run that leads into a large area (about the size of baseball infield) that contain the 3 Sisters. Unfortunately, I was being tooo polite and as the rest of the class headed on in, I paused and a group of fanatical snorkelers with about $500 of bright new shiney Scuba Pro Twin Jets fins got in ahead of me.... oy vay....

We all jump in and head for last 'sighting'. VIZ is pretty bad... now the newbies know what the Gulf looks like most of the time. Since we don't see any manatees we head over to the King Spring opening. There's a nice school of mangrove snappers hanging around one of the entrances. Poked around a bit and after a while I bumped into Becky... guess where she was? yup.... in the hole... she waved me in and away I go.... she knows I'm not much for the the whole 'overhead' gimik, but since she's waving me in I figure it must be pretty big.... Sure 'nuff... lots of room in the initial passage. whew... coming around and out of the 'mini' loop we come to the exit and so sollie... it's nowhere near as gorgeous as Blue Grotto - but it is pretty cool.
Come on up and head out of the spring basin and low and behold - MANATEES!!!! a whole freakin' flock of them! OMG... this is so cool. 5 or 6 of them head off into the gloom, but one of them decides to slow down... take a breath... and proceeds to take a nap! Talk about a photo...

DIVERS PARADISE.... says so right on their license plates.... and they're not kidding. Trying a new format of showing the highlights of a trip, this is 5:29 of hard cuts, short clips and a lot of fun. The size is a bit big, but it's in 640x480 instead of the 320x240 of the rest of the clips on this page, but then, with just everybody having a good Internet connection, it shouldn't be too bad. Key Largo
- HIGHLIGHTS 11MB - 06:03 |
When it rains it pours.... was just here 2 weeks ago.... Trying a new format of inserting my dive buddies pictures in the video.... that's fun. City of Washington has the best shots I've ever gotten of a parrotfish.... He's a bit beat up... maybe that's the reason he was nice and still. Trying out my UK LightCannon HIDS on the Spiegel Grove.... yetch.... doesn't seem to be worth the effort. Benwood was nice and so was SPIKE, but Snapper Alley will HAVE to go down as one of the best dives of my life. Great footage of me 'being' a grunt..... I was able to drift right into the the middle of the school - totally awesome!
Trying a new 4 QUAD format for highligts... a bit busy, but a good learning experience. |

Gulf of Mexico
- HIGHLIGHTS 4MB - 02:00 |
Great to be back in the Water. Too bad the water really didn't care that we were there. The VIZ sucked, but had fun none the less.
The first video has the standard contingent of tug Orange Goliath Groupers a great shot of a Cobia. The sweet spot on the video is the awesome jellyfish with it's armada of little fishee's and then a very cool anemone on the bow; but the highlight has to be the barracuda farting (yes, farting) at the very end.
The second video is mostly, well, artsy~fartsy. The reason is is because there was only about 3 minutes of usable footage. You see; the dang camera broke free while I was hanging on the anchor line waiting for my dive buddy and proceeded to sink 70' to the bottom. So there is about 25 minutes of footage of it sitting on the bottom waiting for me to find it! To add insult to injury; I had mashed the FULL ZOOM button so for the next 5 minutes as I headed up for my safety stop everything was out of focus; I was too preoccupied with heading up until a massive school of Amberjacks swam right by me that I even bothered looking through the viewfinder. Did get some nice footage of another one of the those viciously cool jellyfish. |

Great to be back on the East Coast. "Dusk - The Corridor" is my favourite; it was very cool doing this series of shipwrecks at dusk. At first we thought it would be a bit lame, but the dim light made all the wrecks seem delightfully ghostly. It was also great as I guess this location is an overnight hotel for turtles; by the end of the dive it seems the wreck is literally infested w/turtles! |

TUG SHERIDAN |
What an awesome dive - read the whole description here. It really was like 2 dives in 1 dive. The bow was so covered in bait it was like a night dive, the stern was a gorgeous day dive! I broke the video up accordingly. There was so much footage the original cut was almost 20 minutes long. I was able to break that down to the RDV version to 10 minutes, but that was still a bit long; so I broke out the big hammer and cut it down to an acceptable 5 minutes. |
