There is an excellent Dave Barry article he did when he learned to SCUBA dive. Don't think anybody could have said it better!
I will spare you a gushy description of the dive itself, except to say that when you finally see what goes on underwater, you realize that you've been missing the whole point of the ocean. Staying on the surface all the time is like going to the circus and staring at the outside of the tent.
Gotta love it, one of best bud's from Canada just sent me this little joke.... For us Canuk's we love to poke fun at the people from Newfoundland.... you can certainly change this to YOUR favorite...
An American tourist asks a Newfoundlander:
"Why do Scuba Divers always fall backwards off their boats into the water?"
To which the Newfoundlander replies:
"If they fell forwards they'd still be in the fockin' boat."
